In the year the US-government declared Year of Languages . . .

*  German ranked 3rd most learned US foreign language

*  German programs threatened for fiscal and political reasons

*  Need for communication among different kinds of programs

 

In 2008

*  GLOWdatabase,

  • the only channel to reach out to the majority of people
    who are working in the field of teaching German
  • special channel for those non-members of professional
    organizations because they are part-time or retired

*  GLOWbriefing,

  • the new and unique way to reach out to the community, identified by thousands of hours of work by a handful of volunteers

*  GLOWawards

  • honoring American high school students of German

 

Who

Dr. Cecilia Cloughly, Claremont, California

  • Began development of the GLOWdatabase in 2003 as
    AATG president, Southern California Chapter
  • Initiated, compiled, and advertised GLOW
    with the help of other grassroots volunteers
  • Has worked as a teacher of German at three colleges,
    two high schools, a community college, and now
    (in semi-retirement) as an elementary after-school teacher
  • Was elected officer of foreign language professional
    organizations at local, state, and national levels
  • Dr. Cloughly was in 2005 awarded Germany's
    Bundesverdienstkreuz mit Anhang (Federal Cross of
    Merit) and named AATG Outstanding German Educator
    (Secondary Level).
